4 REASONS WHY EVERY STUDENT SHOULD KEEP A JOURNAL

As a student, keeping a daily journal should be part of your habits. A journal is a record (originally in handwritten format) with discrete entries arranged by date reporting on what has happened over the course of a day or other period. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diary)

A personal journal may include a person’s experiences, thoughts, and/or feelings, excluding comments on current events outside the writer’s direct experience. Some people often like to refer to journals as diaries; nonetheless, they both perform the same function of helping you express your thoughts in writing. There are several benefits of keeping a daily journal.

  • Keeping a journal is a great way to preserve memories when they occur. It is easy to forget when one experiences something. You might not forget the entire experience but you might forget important bits of it, such as date and location of the event. Keeping a journal helps you to put down proper records of events that you can always make reference to.
  • Journaling also helps you improve your writing skills. Good writing skills is a skill every student must acquire, although you might not be dreaming of becoming the next Chinua Achebe, your ability to piece words together could be your saving grace in an all essay type question. And for those hoping to become the next big name in writing, journaling is your sure bet to horning those skills.
  • It also sharpens your ability to observe your environment. Writing about your experiences can make you a better observer. When we know we are going to write about something, we pay a different kind of attention to it. Keeping a journal gets you in the habit of noticing important details of your daily life, thus helping you observe events as they unfold around you.
  • It also helps you to improve your memory. Writing down an idea or a reflection reinforces what you already know. Furthermore keeping records of events also forces your mind to arrange them in a particular order storing every detail for later recollection

To start journaling, all you need is a journal and a pen or pencil. Ask your parent to give you one or you could also save up to buy one at your local book store. This is a healthy exercise that could benefit you psychologically.

If this is something you are already doing, kindly lets us know how it has benefited you in the comment section.
