Do you know about menstrual cups? Menstrual cups may be the solution you have been looking for to help with your periods. Though not so popular, they are useful. Here is some information on menstrual cups.
What is a menstrual cup?
A menstrual cup is a product that is inserted into the vagina during menstruation. The cup prevents menstrual fluid from leaking onto clothes. Apparently, menstrual cups have been around for decades, however, they are not a very popular way of containing menstrual fluids. Therefore, they are not widely used compared to sanitary pads and tampons.
Menstrual cups come in different sizes. Most of them are colorless though you will find some brands with pink or purple menstrual cups.
What are the benefits of using menstrual cups?
1. Unlike tampons and pads, menstrual cups do not absorb menstrual fluid, they collect the fluid. Therefore, they can be used for a longer period without being disposed-off.
2. Menstrual cups are said to be eco-friendly since they are reusable. Therefore, there is no waste disposed-off with every use, like in the case of sanitary pads and tampons.
3. As unusual as it may sound, if the user of a menstrual cup needs the menstrual fluid or needs to track the flow for medical reasons, a menstrual cup is the best way to do so. This is even easier to do with some cups because they have marks on them.
4. They are considered safe compared to other forms of menstrual hygiene products.
5. Because menstrual cups collect menstrual fluid inside the vagina, they have a less chance of leaking if inserted properly and emptied regularly.
What are some of the downsides of using menstrual cups
1. Since menstrual cups must be emptied and cleaned at reasonable intervals or when they are needed, it may pose challenges when the user is at a public place. This is because, after it is emptied, it needs to be washed and handwashing sinks at public spaces may not be in the toilet cubicle. Coupled with that, some may find washing a menstrual cup in a public sink unsanitary.
2. Menstrual cups can be messy because blood can spill during removal. Therefore, you can take wet wipes or a bottle of water to help you clean your menstrual cup if the need arises.
3. Not having access to clean water to wash the cup may be challenging in a community that does not have clean water available.
These are some of the important things you must note about using menstrual cups. Do you use menstrual cups? What has been your experience?
