E-Learning Platform Launched for SHS Students

An electronic learning platform dubbed, ‘Wolo’ has been launched to be used by students in Senior High Schools (SHS) in the country. This platform was launched by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

The platform that seeks to improve the academic performance covers subjects such as Science, Business and General Arts, which are taught by tutors from top-notch schools with excellent track- record.

Lessons, which are delivered using an e-teaching method, are available in videos with self-tests that are accessible via the internet and digital television. The technology also has specifically designed application to prepare students for examination based on SHS syllabus, a library with free books and bookstore.

Mrs Owusu-Erkuful, who is also the Minister of Communications, said that the ban on mobile phones should be re-examined. She appealed to schools to monitor the use of mobile phones by students.

The Minister urged students who are on vacation to make optimal use of the platform so as to improve their academic performance.

“It’s imperative that students are encouraged to make use of their time. While you are here learning you won’t be out on the street doing anti-social things,” she said.

She added that the government, through the Communication Ministry, would push for the adoption of the platform nationwide through partnerships with other agencies like the Ghana Investment Fund and Electronic Communication (GIFEC).

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Wolo Ghana Limited, Joe Anim, in an interview, disclosed that the company would require funding to make the platform accessible offline especially in areas where the internet is not available.

He expressed the readiness of the company to partner stakeholders in ensuring that the project benefits all communities in the country.

Mr. Anim said, “To the telcos, this is something they can do to help children by reducing the data charges.”

Mrs Owusu-Erkuful, who was on a tour of the constituency, also cut the sod for the construction of the Shiabu Police Post which is expected to improve security in the area.
