The Great Hall of KNUST was a sight to behold last Saturday, when eleven-year-old Nadia Mashoud Chelpang, a student of Alhassan Gbanzaba Memorial School won the 2020 Spelling Bee. She beats 150 other candidates to win the most coveted spelling competition in Ghana.
Nadia takes over from the 2019 winner, Kwabena Adu Darko-Asare as the reigning Spelling Bee Champion.
She is also the first person from the Northern Region to win the Spelling Bee. This year’s competition is believed to be the toughest since it started 13 years ago.
For her prize, she gets a return ticket to Washington DC to represent Ghana at the 93rd Scribes Spelling Bee, a DSTV decoder, 4000 cedis, 1000 cedis book voucher from blue-night and a year’s subscription with an online dictionary.
Awards and trophy was presented to the winner by Lady Julia Osei-Tutu, wife of Otumfuo Osei Tutu. Speaking to the press, Nadia thanked her coach, her friend who encouraged her to try her hands at it, her teachers and family.
Araba Aku-Mishee, a pupil of University of Ghana Basic School placed second. She won the penultimate round when she spelt ‘connoisseur ‘correctly. However, she was knocked out of the competition when she failed to spell “pneumococcus”.
Aku received a return ticket to Kenya, cash prize of GHS 2,000, GHS 800 worth of gift voucher for books, a silver medal, a DSTV decoder plus 6 months’ subscription, a certificate of recognition, among other prizes.
Joel of Victoria Grammar School came third. He took home a cash prize of GHS 1,500, a DSTV decoder, GHS 500 worth of gift voucher for books, a bronze medal, certificate of recognition among other prizes from sponsors
