GNAT says headteacher in leaked sex video not blameworthy

The Ghana National Association of Teachers(GNAT) has dismissed statements that the headteacher captured in a leaked sex video with a Senior High School student was at fault. Central Regional Secretary of GNAT, Buadu Abedu William has revealed that the girl’s parents are aware of the amorous relationship between the headteacher and their daughter, and also confirmed the girl’s age as 19. He said this in an interview with Accra based Starr FM.

The Headteacher of the Edumanu D/A Basic School, Robert Sepey has been on the run since a 4-minute video of him having sex with the 19-year-old girl kneeling on a kitchen stool surfaced.

Mr Abedu on behalf of GNAT has said that they are mainly concerned about the issue being a situation between a teacher and a school girl, and not necessarily the act, since the girl was not defiled. He added that any sanctions against the headteacher will be determined by the Ghana Education Service(GES) which in this case is the employer. Mr. Abedu said when the GES establishes their first impression on the face of the matter, they can put Mr. Sapey before a disciplinary committee. He established that since the girl is nineteen, she is not a minor, therefore the matter has no legal implications, saying morality does not exist in the law.

Meanwhile Public Relations Officer of GES, Cassandra Twum, says sanctions will be applied if Mr Sapey is found blameworthy. She said the GES has asked the Regional and District Directors  to launch investigations into the matter.

The Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District Education Directorate has ordered the Circuit Supervisor of Education to act as the head of the school to provide leadership for academic work to progress.
