Dear Blog,

I need a little advice, please!

I am a parent of a teenage girl and I am in a sticky situation with my daughter. My daughter turned thirteen about 4 months ago and since she celebrated her birthday I have noticed a lot has changed about her. She no longer wants to do all the mommy – and – me things we use to do when she was younger.
For instance, I used to pick her up from school every day and we would visit the market together. On weekends, we would watch all her favourite shows on TV while munching on chocolate chip cookies. These were activities she enjoyed greatly and was the source of our inseparable bond.
But once she turned thirteen, she no longer wants to participate in any of the activities she used to enjoy with me. When I asked her about why she didn’t want to spend time with me anymore, she told me she was tired and she wants to sleep.
Initially, I bought into the   “I am tired” excuse and gave her space, hoping she would eventually come around. To my surprise, she didn’t seem interested in me or anything that had to do with spending time with me.

I spoke to her for a second time to ask her why she no longer wants to spend time with me. She was quiet for a while and then she looked me dead in the eye and told me I wasn’t “cool” to hang with. She added that she feels she is too grown to spend time with me. I felt sad at first but I realized that my daughter is no longer the little girl I used to know and she is gradually becoming an adult.
I love hanging out with my daughter and I need to find a way to get her to spend time with me again but I am at a loss as to what to do in terms finding interesting activities that a teenage girl would find cool. I desperately need to come up with something interesting soon. Kindly help a mother with suggestions of ‘cool’ activities a teen would be interested in.
