Important Technological Terms

Technology has become an essential part of our lives. Technology helps us to share information and ideas and plays a major part in the business framework of some companies. With the various ways in which technology is used, it is true that it comes with its own terminologies. You are likely to hear or read these words as you utilize ICT on a daily basis so it is important to understand them.

To help you keep up, we have put together 10 of the most commonly used words in tech, to help you understand what they mean.  Before you proceed, kindly check out things every student needs here

Engagement

This word refers to interactions that people make with your post online especially on social media. This includes likes, shares, comments, and other interactions. Businesses use this to measure their reach, audience and consequently their presence on social media.

Troll

Has someone ever posted so many unpleasant (perhaps abusive) things about you or someone else on social media or other online groups and platforms? That person can be described as a troll. Trolls use inflammatory comments to ridicule, attack and abuse other people online. The process of doing that is called trolling.

Microblogging

Just like the name suggests, a microblog is a platform which allows for the publishing of short content. Some microblogs include Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Tumblr.

Organic

If content on social media gets more engagement without the content being paid for or promoted, the content can be described as organic. For example, a meme that goes viral on social media without being promoted can be described as organic content or can be said to have gained organic reach.

Call to Action (CTA)

When you finish reading or viewing content online and you see an image, a text, banner or a form asking you to take an action such as joining an email list, signing up for a newsletter or buy a product, it is a call to action. Literally, you are being asked to take action after reading the content. Look out for a call to action at the end of this post.

Front end

The part of a website that you interact with as a user is described as the front end of the website. Usually, front end development involves coding with HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

Bugs

Bugs stop your website or program from functioning correctly. They are usually as a result of coding mistakes or pieces of code that are not needed.

API

If you always hear the world API and are wondering what it means, API is the acronym for Application Programming Interface. It is used in software development. Mostly, it is used to provide a set of rules and building blocks for a program.

Wearables

Heard the word wearables and wondering what it means? This is a technology that includes devices such as fitness bands and smartwatches. Wearables are mostly connected to the internet and can be used to perform various tasks.

Cookies

When you visit a website and see a message asking you to confirm or accept the use of cookies, what it means is simple. These are files that are used to store data and track users. Website owners and businesses use cookies to advertise products to you online depending on which sites you often visit and what you frequently search for.
