It has been three weeks since the locked down and it is quite normal to be experiencing kuchisabishi. For the benefit of those who don’t know what kuchisabishi means, it is a Japanese word used to explain when one is not hungry but eats because their mouth is lonely.

For those experiencing this phenomena or simply desire to snack while they homeschool or work, it is pertinent that one sticks to a healthy snack option.

Healthy snack options such as a smoothie could help boost a person’s immune system while they are on lockdown.

A smoothie is a thick and creamy beverage made from blended raw fruit, vegetables, and sometimes dairy products. The combination of the type of fruit to use mostly depends on personal preference, thus there is no one size fits all ingredient to make a smoothie. The important thing is to ensure one is not allergic to any of the fruits or lactose intolerant.

Thus, find below a recipe and tools used for making a smoothie and a sandwich

Ingredients ( Smoothie)

2 cups of milk  ( almond or soya milk for those who are lactose intolerant )

A mugful of vanilla yoghurt

Four fingers of banana (you can skip if you are allergic to bananas)

2 mangoes ( or any other fruit of your choice)

1 coconut

A tablespoon of honey to taste

 A strong blender


First step is to wash all fruits in a salt solution or under running water.

Proceed to peel, crack and cut to small sizes all fruits that require peeling 

Place fruits in a clean bowl or zip lock bag and then place the bowl or the bag in a freezer to freeze.

Take out frozen fruits from the freezer and then proceed to put it in a blender to blend for a few minutes.

It is important to blend intermittently so you don’t damage your blender as a result of the ice

Pour the contents from the blender into a clean glass and store in the fridge to keep it cool while you make a snack to go with it.

Fresh tomatoes

 A block of Cheese


Onions ( based on personal preference)


To Make Your Sandwich

Cut bread into thin slices ( any bread of your choice)

Wash all vegetables under running water or salt solution

Cut all vegetables ( tomatoes and onions)  into small sizes

Slice cheese into small slices

Place sliced vegetable and cheese in between two slices of bread

Place each sandwich on a clean plate after placing all the necessary ingredient in-between the  bread

Serve the glass of fresh smoothie with the sandwich on a clean tray.  Don’t forget to wash your hands before you start eating your snack.
