This week Accra Girls recorded cases of COVID, some teachers have tested positive and it’s given rise to a conversation in our media spaces about whether final year students should still be in school.
Some section of students believe safety first thus, the exams should be postponed again. Others believe that the disease has come to stay and we must learn to live with it and so learning must go on.
Looking at what others are doing around the world, it seems countries are calling for the postponement of final examinations.
Nigeria is one of such. Today, The Nigerian Government has rescinded its decision to allow students back in the classroom to write their final exams.
This comes on the heel of earlier reports which claims that students across the country were going to be allowed back to school to write the WASSCE.
According to Mallam Adamu the Minister for Education, all final year students preparing for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will not be allowed to return to school contrary to what had earlier been believed because it was not yet safe.
Mallam Adamu said, he would prefer that Nigerian students lose an academic year than to expose them to the dangers of the Coronavirus which has claimed 684 lives in the country.
He appealed to states authorities that have announced the resumption of schools in their states to reconsider their position so as not to jeopardize the lives of the students.
Either way, continue to observe the protocols. Students must wear the mask at all times, don’t touch the mask or their face, wash their hands frequently, sanitize their desks, pens etc.
Days students who commute to school daily by public transport should sanitize their seats before sitting, after giving money to the conductor and avoid contact with people while being seated. They must wash their hands as soon as they get on to the school’s premises.
