
At the just ended international youth innovation conference organized by the Shenzhen Federation, UNFPA, UNIDO, UN Office for South South Cooperation and UNDP in November, 14th 2019, Mr. Cyril Otabil, a young Ghanaian doing exploits in the area of sexual and reproductive education in Ghana, emerged second after his pitch was selected and awarded as second best initiative that seeks to impact social change through a sustainable social enterprise.
With over nine years’ experience in creating awareness on issues affecting women and children voluntarily, his efforts were crowned with this prestigious award.
Cyril was nominated by UNFPA – Ghana to join 27 other nominees from different parts of the world, to pitch innovative ideas in order to make a social impact. Aside that, the pitch was to be a social enterprise which is sustainable. Cyril made his pitch beautifully. His pitch centred on what UNFPA is doing in Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service.
Out of the 28 representatives, 8 were chosen after the first selection stage and Cyril was one of the 8 remaining. On the ticket of the UNFPA, there were about four other young people selected from different countries but at the end of the selection process, Cyril flew the flag of Ghana high as the only UNFPA representative who survived the pens of the judges to make it that far.
Mr. Otabil’s pitch was adjudged the second most innovative ‘adolescent social enterprise.’
For his prize, Cyril has won an all-expenses paid trip to Shenzhen, China in 2020 to meet up with World Class Entrepreneurs and Developers to receive mentoring in order to scale the initiative he pitched to develop it fully for a successful use.
His pitch highlighted the Ghana Health Service Adolescent Health Development Programme’s app which creates access to sexual reproductive health information and service provision for Young People.
Cyril is a student of University of Ghana. While at school, he spent his long vacations volunteering for the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana-Youth Action Movement out of passion for young people’s development in relation to their sexual and reproductive health. Cyril aspires to become a skilled lawyer with specialization in family law. He takes pictures as a hobby and loves to sing as well. He is a member of the VocalEssence Chorale and a coach for the Children’s Service choir at the Martyrs of Uganda Catholic Church.
