Schools Should Cultivate The Reading Habit In Pupils

The importance of reading is something that cannot be dispensed in the life of a child. This is the reason why every school must make the necessary provision for materials and logistics that will help the child to cultivate the habit of reading. In children, reading improves focus and concentration thus, teachers experience less stress in keeping their pupils in check. Children who read are better at school and have incredible communicative ability.

In this regard, the foremost responsibility of schools is to build a good library stocked with a lot of storybooks and textbooks on varying subjects. This provides an avenue for reading and it facilitates learning and development of knowledge and confidence in seeking and processing knowledge among children. Also, it helps teachers to have access to relevant curriculum information and professional development materials in order to plan, implement and evaluate learning programs for school children. Schools can also establish  reading clubs where children will meet to share what they read during the week. This will help them  learn from one another, discover new things and get their creative juices flowing.

Reading teaches children about the world around them. Through reading, they learn about people, places and events outside their experience. It advances a child’s imagination and this is because when one reads, his or her brain translates the descriptions of the people read about, places and things into pictures. The administrative body of schools, which includes teachers, must help in developing the interest in reading among school children.

The mind is like a muscle, it can only be strengthened through reading.
