University to collaborate with Assembly to control sports betting among students

Management of the Sunyani Technical University (STU) is to collaborate with the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to control sports betting, which is alarmingly gaining grounds among University students in the Municipality.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) investigations revealed that many of the male and female students at the STU, used their tuition fees for sports betting and because of that, many of the students owed the university.

But, Dr Justice Solomon Korantwi-Barimah, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the STU, who confirmed the story to the GNA, said the Management had already met and discussed the matter with the Student Representative Council (SRC).

He regretted that instead of concentrating on their books, many of the students spent time on sports betting, which was affecting their studies and called for effective collaboration between the Ghana Education Service and relevant institutions to control sports betting among the youth in the country.

Meanwhile, students from the STU and other tertiary institutions highly patronized operations of one of the betting companies, which had opened an outlet opposite the STU’s main campus along the Sunyani-Kumasi highway.

When the GNA visited the betting centre around the University last night, many of the students were busily engaged in the gambling.

Some of them including female students were seriously glued to their mobile phones, whilst others sought assistance from other colleagues and the operators of the centre.

An attendant at the centre confirmed to the GNA that more than 70 of the university students visit the centre daily for the online sports gambling.
