Why I love Christmas

I have had a love-hate relationship with Christmas for a while.
When I was between the ages of 6 till about 10, I loved Christmas- it came with school events like learning and singing Christmas carols, decorating our classrooms with decor we made by ourselves and then the mega ‘our day’.

At home, it ushered in routines like clothing and shoe shopping, new around -the year – bedtime storybooks, I got to touch my hair and could eat and drink as much as I wanted till I couldn’t breathe properly.
Oh! And during these years, I didn’t play any major roles in the many chores going on. I just had a portion to sweep and had to do my dishes after eating. So, I simply played, watched movies, got to step out a few times with older cousins or attended parties and weddings with my parents and there were tones of these events.

Without warning, I turned 11, 12 and then 13, and Christmas meant more chores, lots of errands and little time to play and just lazy about. Though I still got new clothes and all of that, a lazy teen like me didn’t like that bit of it.
My paternal family decided to host their end of year parties in a family members house. Each family was to get their turn to host this party.
The menu was goat stew, okro soup and others. The goat was slaughtered on Christmas morning. I did not understand the sudden change from having a more exciting exotic dish to banku- as an Ewe, I ate banku quite often and the Christmas season was supposed to be different.
As if to say my opinion didn’t matter, my family hosted that family party about 3 consecutive times. By the third time after witnessing the gruesome slaughter of goats, I took a dislike for goat meat and to date, I do not like it.

Fast forward to when I was about 16 and was in boarding school, I came home on Christmas vacation with my own plans.
My parents also decided to stop getting me clothes because I was now picky or more conscious about what I wanted to wear. Not wanting drama, my parents waited till I got back from school and then accompanied my siblings and I where we wanted to shop. Over time, my parents gave my siblings and I the money to get ourselves whatever we wanted for the period. They had had enough of lists they couldn’t interpret.
We also got to choose what meals we should have during the season and of course, we opted to eat out less work and more fun.
Currently, Christmas means more to me. I enjoy the dry harmattan, strangely, the break from work, seeing friends who are back home on holiday etc. I still enjoy the carols and the beautiful scenery all around me – decors and soothing music in shops, homes and even on the principal streets of town.
What is Christmas without “home alone”? I have lost count on the number of times I have seen it but I still watch it and it’s still fresh. I am not sure I enjoy the cliche messages and videos my relatives keep forwarding to me but I appreciate the fact that it’s a season to be jolly and so, these are the reasons why I love Christmas.
